Squeaky Clean Cleanut
Following the recent coverage in the media about the possible link between using products containing parabens and increasing the risk of developing breast cancer, I'm glad I use natural and organic make-up, skincare, shampoo and shower gel, and most of the household cleaning products I use are eco-friendly and chemical-free as well, but what about laundry detergents? If the ingredients used in everyday detergents contain the same sort of chemicals and petroleum -based surfactants as some mainstream skincare cleansers do, then are we are also in danger of absorbing these nasty toxins into our bloodstreams via our clean laundry too? I'm not taking any chances, so I've started using Alma Wins Cleanut Liquid Detergent.
I prefer a liquid detergent to a powder detergent (Alma Win do both), so I decided to give the Cleanut a go, because soapnut (which is the key ingredient) makes your clothes softer and easier to iron. Bonus!
Soapnuts grow on trees in India and Nepal, they contain saponin - a natural detergent, are used in Ayurvedic medicine, and in India they've been using them as a detergent for over 3,000 years. Alma Win's Cleanut blends soap nut extracts with organic vegetable soaps and other natural ingredients to give it that extra cleaning boost. So, it uses extracts of corn, potato and cane instead of petroleum-derived surfactants to keep your whites bright.
But what about the smell, I've always loved that fresh laundry smell (usually achieved through adding artificial perfumes unfortunately). Well, Cleanut used natural fragrances - organic vervain and eucalyptus - and it smells sort of lemony to me. Nothing overpowering, just nice and fresh.
The verdict? It works! I've been really pleased with the results. Cleanut doesn't contain any optical brighteners, yet my whites came out dazzling; even very dirty clothes came out clean and smelling fresh after a 40° wash (Cleanut is effective in washes from 20° - 60°). I like the fact that instead of putting the detergent in the drawer, you put it directly into the drum with the dirty washing, so it starts working its magic immediately. And I that I've eliminated the use of chemicals in another part of my daily routine. Those perky toxins aren't getting near me - not through my deodorant, moisturiser, shampoo or laundry detergent, you're not coming in!
Biodegradable, perfect for even the most sensitive skin, not tested on animals, suitable for vegans, and 100% natural.
