When your very first menstrual period appears you wonder "what is happening to me!", don't be worried, it is all a part of becomming a young woman, you may only bleed for a day or two which is completely normal. Once your menstrual periods are regular and becoming a monthly pattern, this is known as your menstrual cycle, you will be surprised by how much blood you seem to lose as it may look like a lot, but it is only about 3 - 4 tablespoons. It is not a sudden gush, and the blood does not come out all at once, it comes slowly. At first you will see a reddish-brown stain in your pants, or on your clothing and if your menstrual period starts during the night a stain may appear on your bed sheets. When you notice the stain this is the start of your first menstrual period and the start of growing up. It is nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about and you should tell an adult that this is happening to your body. Your first menstrual period has begun.
